The Melbourne Beach Pier offers visitors a blend of historical charm and natural beauty.
Extending gracefully over the Indian River Lagoon, this wooden pier provides panoramic views, making it a favored spot for both relaxation and recreation.
Constructed between 1888 and 1889 by the Indian River and Atlantic Railway Company, the Melbourne Beach Pier served as a crucial transportation link.
It facilitated the movement of tourists, residents, freight, and mail between the mainland and the barrier island.
A standard gauge railroad once ran from the pier's west end to the Atlantic Ocean, enhancing accessibility to the area.
Recognizing its historical value, the pier was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places on April 12, 1984.
A restoration project in 1985, supported by local citizens and state programs, helped preserve this iconic structure. The Mayor at the time, Bud Conroy, led the way and engineer D. Michael Miller, P.E. provided the required engineering plans.
Located at the intersection of Ocean Avenue and Riverside Drive in Melbourne Beach, Florida, the pier is easily accessible to visitors.
While specific operating hours may vary, the pier is generally open to the public year-round.
Adjacent to Ryckman Park, visitors can enjoy additional amenities such as picnic areas and playgrounds.
For those interested in fishing, the pier offers ample space and benches, making it a popular spot for anglers.
