HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE

Hugh Taylor Birch, a successful Chicago attorney, purchased this land in the early 20th century as a winter retreat.

Fascinated by its pristine coastal hammock ecosystem, a rarity in Florida, Birch recognized the ecological value of the area. In 1941, he donated the land to the State Of Florida hoping to preserve its natural beauty for future generations.

The park remains a testament to his dedication to conservation and is named in his honor. The park’s value is also enriched by its proximity to Bonnet House, another historic landmark once part of Birch’s estate.

VISITING DETAILS

Hugh Taylor Birch State Park is located at 3109 E. Sunrise Blvd, Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The park is open daily from 8:00 AM until sunset. Admission fees are $6 per vehicle, with additional discounts for solo visitors and bicyclists.

Visitors can choose from a range of activities like hiking, cycling, kayaking, and picnicking. The park has well-marked trails, picnic areas, and a lagoon ideal for paddling.

Make sure you have sunscreen, drinking water, and (last but not least) insect repellant as coastal hammocks & marshes have biting bugs aplenty.
