Havana Cafe of the Everglades is a casual family owned-restaurant that many visitors to Chokoloskee make a special point of enjoying for breakfast, lunch, or early dinner.
If you are not into fishing or chilling out in laid back end of the road towns, you may consider making a special trip just to visit this place.
The restaurant has an excellent reputation for its delicious seafood offerings, many of them served with what the restaurant describes as "Latin accents."
The fun starts when you enter the place and enjoy the warm feeling it immediately projects. You will greeted by one or more of the friendly staff.
Breakfast is a favorite stop for many locals and visitors. It has some good old American standards, but also has many with a Latin twist such as Huevos Rancheros, Shrimp and Grits, and a Chorizo Sandwich. The home fries are great.
You can begin your dining adventure with a drink and something from the small appetizer menu. Some of the goodies on this menu are stone crab (when in season), Mussels Enchilado, Shrimp Tostones, Fried Calamari, and that old standby, Peel 'n Eat Shrimp.
They feature salads that you can order with your lunch or dinner or as a stand alone meal. These include fresh grouper salad, chicken breast salad, mahi mahi salad, and a fresh gulf shrimp salad with the little creatures served grilled, fried, or blackened.
You can also ask about their "soup of the day."
The entrees are all served with white rice, black beans, and vegetables unless you want it another way.
The entree selection features great choices from both sea and land. The sea offerings include Carlos's Shrimp Plate, Stone Crab Enchilado, Grouper Plate, Shrimp Enchilado, and Mahi Mahi Plate.
Landlubbers will enjoy the Palomilla Steak Plate, Chicken Plate, Chicken Finger Basket, and Pork Plate. Vegetarians are not forgotten either, with the choice of a nice Vegetarian Plate featuring sauteed fresh vegetables.
You can also get sandwiches to eat here or take out. Some of these are Dulce's Cuban Sandwich, Media Noche, Palomilla Steak, pork, and many others.
Domestic and imported beer is available, as well as wine, sangria, or mimosa.
Havana Cafe is open Wednesday-Sunday from 7am to 4pm.
