HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE

St. Cloud was founded in 1909 by the Seminole Land and Investment Company as a settlement for Union Army veterans. Dubbed the "Soldier City," it quickly became a haven for former soldiers and their families.

The Grand Army of the Republic Hall was constructed as a gathering place for the veterans' fraternal  organization, which provided camaraderie, support, and advocacy for those who had served during the Civil War.

The hall hosted many GAR events and played a central role in the social and civic life of the community.

Over time, the hall became a repository of Civil War history, housing artifacts, documents, and memorabilia. Although the GAR dissolved in the mid-20th century as its members passed away, the Memorial Hall continues to preserve their legacy.

Albert Henry Woolson (1850 - 1956) was the last Civil war veteran of the Union Army and died on August 2, 1956.

Today, the hall is operated as a museum by the Woman's Relief Corps, the auxiliary of the GAR.
