The Flora-Bama Interstate Mullet Toss is held at the Flora-Bama Lounge and Oyster Bar located on Perdido Beach west of Pensacola.
It is on the Florida-Alabama state line, hence its catchy name.
It opened in 1964 and has been popular ever since. It is a local destination for live music, seafood, and laid back funky ambiance.
Old license plates, abandoned bras, and other knick knacks cover the walls of this place and you won't be complete until you leave something of your own.
Another quirky feature of this place is the Interstate Mullet Toss. This is an annual event that has become one of the biggest beach parties anywhere.
Its organizers decided that tossing a mullet is as good a reason as any to have a beach party. Animal rights activists are assured that none of the mullet used in the contest are alive.
Contestants in this event stand in a ten foot diameter circle in the Florida beach sand and throw a dead mullet over the state line into the state of Alabama.
Whoever throws the fish the farthest wins the contest. Don't confuse the fish with the bad haircut a lot of misguided men choose to wear.
Some of the proceeds of the entrance fees go to local youth charities. Most years these contributions add up to more than $20,000.
The event is held the last full weekend of April every year.
