The A.C. Freeman House located in Punta Gorda, Florida is a beautifully preserved example of Queen Anne-style architecture.
Built in 1903, this two-story Victorian home reflects the charm of early 20th-century South Florida.
Owned by the City of Punta Gorda and currently leased to the Charlotte County Chamber of Commerce, it serves as a museum operated by the Punta Gorda Historical Society, offering visitors a glimpse into the region’s past.
Despite recent hurricane damage, it remains a cherished landmark, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1987.
Constructed for Augustus C. Freeman, a prominent businessman and politician, the house is a reminder of Punta Gorda’s early growth.
Freeman, who owned a hardware store and citrus grove, served as mayor, sheriff, and city commissioner between 1896 and 1904.
He purchased the land in 1903 from Albert Gilchrist, later Florida’s governor, dispelling myths that Gilchrist owned the house.
Facing demolition in the 1980s, it was saved, moved two blocks in 1985, and relocated again in 2005 after Hurricane Charley.
Restored in 2006, it survived Hurricane Ian in 2022 but sustained damage, prompting ongoing debates about its future, with restoration costs estimated at $1.1 million.
Located across from the Punta Gorda Waterfront Hotel at 311 West Retta Esplanade, the A.C. Freeman House is temporarily closed for restoration as of May 2024, following Hurricane Ian’s impact.
When open, it’s accessible Monday through Friday, 8 am to 5 pm, with no admission fee, though donations support preservation. Visitors can explore the first floor’s museum, with the Chamber of Commerce on the second floor.
