Built in 1937 by Waldo Sexton, an eccentric visionary and entrepreneur, the Driftwood Resort stands as a testament to his creative spirit.

Sexton, known as “The Barefoot Millionaire,” constructed the resort using salvaged materials, including shipwreck wood, driftwood, and other reclaimed items like ship’s wheels.

The design reflects his love for the sea and his passion for collecting unique artifacts, many of which still adorn the property. The Driftwood became a haven for travelers seeking an authentic Florida experience.

It remains an iconic landmark on Vero Beach’s historic oceanfront. One of the most fascinating aspects of the Driftwood Resort is its collection of bells, which were purchased from missions in Mexico and once adorned locomotives like Old 97 of Virginia.

Guests are encouraged to ring a bell upon departure, a tradition that dates back to the resort's early days
